Mersud war Teil der Ausstellung Cruising Utopia – Scenes from the Roma-Queer Imagination, die künstlerische Arbeiten von Roma-Künstler*innen aus LGBTQIA+ Communities präsentiert. Die Ausstellung macht Erlebnisse, Erinnerungen und Protest sichtbar, die sonst in Archiven und marginalisierten Erzählungen verborgen bleiben. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Kraft der Vorstellung – als Widerstand, als Sichtbarkeit, als Heilung.
Am Eröffnungsabend zeigte Mersud Selman seine neue Performance „VERONIKA – The true image“ – ein eindrucksvolles Ritual der Transformation, das Identität als künstlerischen Akt neu verhandelt.
VERONIKA – The true image
„Wer bist du wirklich?“ Mit dieser Frage beginnt die Performance Veronika. In einem etwa dreißigminütigen Live-Act transformiert Selman in einem intimen Zusammenspiel mit einem Model äußere Erscheinung und innere Identität. Der Akt des Stylings – Schneiden, Frisieren, Make-up – wird zum performativen Spiegelprozess, bei dem ein neues Selbst sichtbar wird.
Begleitet von einer dichten Klanginstallation aus Musik, Geräuschen (Föhn, Schere) und Zitaten aus dem Projekt Do Not Spit In My Face, entsteht ein multisensorisches Erlebnis zwischen Nähe, Verletzlichkeit und künstlerischer Autonomie. Den Abschluss bildet ein symbolischer Moment: Das Porträt des Models wird mit einem feuchten Leinentuch abgenommen und als Bild – als „wahres Abbild“ – Teil der Ausstellung.
Mit VERONIKA schafft Mersud Selman eine Brücke zwischen intimer Begegnung und politischer Aussage. Die Performance verleiht jenen Sichtbarkeit, deren Körper und Geschichten zu oft unsichtbar gemacht wurden – und verwandelt Styling in ein Mittel der Selbstermächtigung und Würde.

Mersud Selman was part of the exhibition Cruising Utopia – Scenes from the Roma-Queer Imagination, which showcases works by Roma artists from LGBTQIA+ communities. The exhibition gives space to experiences, memories, and protests that are often hidden or silenced—reclaiming them through imagination as resistance, visibility, and healing.
At the opening night, Mersud Selman presented his new performance “VERONIKA – The true image” – a powerful ritual of transformation that redefines identity as an artistic act.
VERONIKA – The true image
“Who are you, really?” This question is the starting point of Veronika. In an approximately 30-minute live act, Selman engages in an intimate transformation of a model’s appearance and inner identity. The act of styling—cutting, hairdressing, make-up—becomes a performative mirror process in which a new self is revealed.
Accompanied by a rich sound installation composed of music, noises (hairdryer, scissors), and quotes from the project Do Not Spit In My Face, the performance becomes a multisensory experience of vulnerability, closeness, and artistic autonomy. It concludes with a symbolic moment: the model’s portrait is imprinted onto a damp linen cloth and displayed as a “true image” in the exhibition.
With VERONIKA, Mersud Selman builds a bridge between intimate encounter and political statement. The performance gives visibility to those whose bodies and stories have too often been erased—and turns styling into a tool of self-empowerment and dignity.

Mersud Selman učestvuje na izložbi Cruising Utopia – Scenes from the Roma-Queer Imagination, koja prikazuje radove romskih umjetnika iz LGBTQIA+ zajednica. Izložba daje glas iskustvima, sjećanjima i protestima koji su često bili potisnuti ili izbrisani – koristeći imaginaciju kao sredstvo otpora, vidljivosti i iscjeljenja.
Na večeri otvaranja, Mersud Selman je izveo svoju novu performansu “VERONIKA – The true image” – snažni ritual transformacije koji identitet predstavlja kao umjetnički čin.
VERONIKA – Prava slika
„Ko si ti zaista?“ Ovo pitanje je polazna tačka performansa Veronika. Tokom otprilike tridesetominutnog live performansa, Selman kroz intimnu interakciju s modelom transformiše vanjski izgled i unutrašnji identitet. Čin stilizovanja – šišanje, frizura, šminka – postaje performativni proces ogledanja, u kojem se otkriva novo „ja“.
Performans je praćen zvučnom instalacijom sastavljenom od muzike, zvukova (fen, makaze) i citata iz projekta Do Not Spit In My Face, stvarajući višesenzorno iskustvo ranjivosti, bliskosti i umjetničke autonomije. Na kraju slijedi simboličan trenutak: portret modela se prenosi na vlažnu platnenu tkaninu i izlaže kao „istinska slika“ u okviru izložbe.
Kroz VERONIKU, Mersud Selman gradi most između intimnog susreta i političke poruke. Performans daje vidljivost onima čiji su životi i priče prečesto bili izbrisani – i pretvara čin stilizovanja u sredstvo osnaživanja i dostojanstva.
